(JNS.org) A rabbi is being sued after allegedly severing a baby boy’s penis while performing a brit milah at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh within the last year. The lawsuit aims to set a precedent for increased regulation of ritual circumcision across the United States.
The lawsuit claims that mohel (circumciser) Rabbi Mordechai Rosenberg acted “with a total disregard” for the child and caused “catastrophic and life-changing injury,” Trib Total Media reported.
Rosenberg allegedly severed the boy’s penis to the extent that doctors needed to perform emergency microsurgery at a nearby children's hospital. Though the reattachment procedure was a success, the boy required an eight-hour procedure and six blood transfusions. Rosenberg, whose website says he is a “certified mohel by the American Board of Ritual Circumcision,” told Pittsburgh’s local CBS television affiliate that the incident was a “tragic accident” and a “horrible situation.”
