Zionist group criticizes Obama for omitting “Israel” in Peres funeral speech transcript

(JNS.org) The Zionist Organization of America criticized President Barack Obama for refusing to recognize Israel’s sovereignty in a recent White House press release that crossed out the word “Israel.”

After President Obama’s speech at former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres’ funeral on Sept. 30, the White House issued a transcript of his address with the location listed as “Mount Herzl, Jerusalem, Israel." Hours later, a corrected press release shows the word “Israel” crossed out.

The decision to cross out Israel in the press release was wrong and insulting, especially considering Mount Herzl is located in West Jerusalem and has been Israel’s national cemetery for over 60 years, ZOA President Morton A. Klein said in a statement on Wednesday.

Klein noted similar instances in which the Obama administration went to “extreme lengths to obliterate the reality of Israel’s rights and sovereignty,” including the U.S. State Department omitting in condolence letters the Jewish and/or Israeli identity of victims of Palestinian terrorist attacks as well as the Jewish/Israeli locations of those attacks.
