(JNS.org) A candidate for president of the U.K.’s largest Jewish student organization is a supporter of the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement and is involved with pro-Palestinian student groups.

University of York student Eran Cohen is seeking the presidency of the Union of Jewish Students, which represents Jewish students in the U.K. and Ireland.

“I support [BDS] because I believe it will bring about a secular state for all [Israel’s] citizens from the river to the sea. Some people equate that with the destruction of Israel. I don’t,” Cohen has written on Facebook, the London Jewish Chronicle reported.

Additionally, Cohen said in a statement this month that he believes “the focus of Jewish life is wherever Jews live, and excessive focus on Israel damages the U.K. Jewish community.”

In response to his pro-Palestinian views, Cohen has been called a “disgusting Kapo” and a “self-hating Jew” on Facebook, according to the Jewish Chronicle.

David Brown, executive director of the Union of Jewish Students, took to Facebook to ask for social media harassment of Cohen to stop.

“Some of the ‘grown-ups’ in our community need to follow the lead of our students and engage with ideas they oppose with far more respect and civility,” Brown said.
