The Israeli solidarity event was initiated to send a clear message of support to American Jews, particularly following the most recent attacks in Monsey, N.Y., and Jersey City, N.J.
Eligible recipients will each get $50,000 for cameras, security training, door-hardening and other security enhancements.
The anti-Semitic attacks in New York—home to the largest numbers of Jewish residents in the country—are largely being carried out by members of minority communities, leading to a different set of questions for leaders to grapple with.
The suspects gave the victim, Zachary Hershkovich, 15, his belongings back before exiting the bus.
“Jews are not the problem. There are many problems,” explained Rabbi David Greenstein of Congregation Shomrei Emunah in Montclair, N.J. “There are bad people out there. They’re the problem. Insensitive people. They’re the problem. Crazy people are the problem.”
Grants of up to $100,000 each to nonprofits at risk of terrorist attacks can go towards improving building security by acquiring and installing items ranging from fences, lighting and video surveillance to metal detectors and blast-resistant doors, locks and windows.

From anti-Semitic attacks to BDS and negative rhetoric in Congress, it hasn’t been the most positive year for the Jewish community, even though U.S. President Donald Trump has clearly exhibited his staunch support for Israel.
“Simply stated, it is no longer safe to be identifiably Orthodox in the State of New York. We cannot shop, walk down a street, send our children to school or even worship in peace,” said the Dec. 29 letter.
The Dec. 27 piece, “The Secrets of Jewish Genius,” was about how Jews have contributed much to society despite the small percentage of the world population—all while facing increasing anti-Semitism.
Bail for Grafton Thomas was set to $5 million and he is being held at Rockland County Jail.
“Jews in Brooklyn, New Jersey and now Monsey are under daily threat. A concerted, real-time effort is needed at all levels of government and community to end these attacks,” tweeted B’nai B’rith International.
