Prior to Yom Kippur, most Jews had never heard of the city or synagogue targeted by a right-wing extremist. Now the issue is what has changed and how; a glimpse at the past and present may offer some insight for how the future could look.
The Southern Poverty Law Center has Proclaiming Justice to The Nations listed as being one of 36 Tennessee-based hate groups. It specifically accuses PJTN of being “anti-Muslim.”
“It is urgent that we act promptly and decisively in order to avert further escalation of anti-Semitic sentiment in the country,” stressed Haim Ben-Yakov, CEO of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress.
Footage shows a stranger smacking the victim, who was dressed in traditional Orthodox garb, including a black hat, on a crowded street.
The 121-page report said attitudes towards Judaism over centuries had provided a “fertile seed-bed for murderous anti-Semitism,” and that Anglicans and other Christians must repent for the “sins of the past,” as well as actively challenge anti-Semitic attitudes or stereotypes.
“The ADL has failed to call out any form of anti-Semitism that isn’t borne of white supremacy, and their curriculum is more about tolerance and racism in general than it is about the unique history of anti-Semitism,” said Bryan Leib, a board member of Americans Against Anti-Semitism.
“Too many people in the Labour Party believed it was just a case of a few bad apples for far too long,” said former Labour Party MP Joan Ryan at the ADL’s “Never Is Now” summit. “By the time Labour became institutionally anti-Semitic, it was far too late to root out the Jew-haters.”
“A fierce battle is under way for the future and identity of Jerusalem, and every step should be taken to thwart the P.A.’s attempts to incite residents of east Jerusalem against Israel,” said Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan.
He told the crowd gathered to see him receive the Anti-Defamation League’s International Fellowship Award: “I believe it’s time for a fundamental rethink of social media and how it spreads hate, conspiracies and lies.”
“At the age of 20 on an online forum, I took part in a range of political discussions,” said Aberdeen North candidate Ryan Houghton. “These included terrorism, LGBT rights and anti-Semitism.”
“We must never react with defeatism, which simply rewards evil and feeds darkness; our fear of evil only feeds and animates it,” said Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, who was injured along with two others in the April 27 attack by a lone gunman.
The graduate student union said it has reached out to Hillel and the student who received the response “to request a meeting to discuss how to remedy harm and how to mitigate future harm towards Jewish students on campus.”
