An Israeli man was among four people who drowned when a boat overturned on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy on Sunday night.

Some two dozen people were holding a birthday party aboard the vessel when it capsized due to a storm.

Most of the passengers swam to shore or were rescued by other boats, but four died including a 50-year-old Israeli.

The Israeli embassy in Rome confirmed the fatality and said the man’s family had been notified.

Local authorities opened an investigation into the incident.
