Fund raises more than $165,000 for family of late 4-year-old PA Jewish boy

Shalom Dov Ber Markel’s drowning in a Pennsylvania state park has been ruled an accident.

More than a week after a 4-year-old Jewish boy drowned at Moraine State Park in Pennsylvania, a fund to support the family has raised more than $165,000.

Sholom Dov Ber Markel is survived by his parents, two brothers and a sister and four grandparents, according to the fund page.

On Aug. 7, water rescue and emergency medical service teams responded to a call of an unresponsive boy at the park. They performed CPR to no avail.

The park manager said that the 4-year-old was swimming in a roped-in area. After the beach was shut down, the manager said no hazards were discovered.

“He embodied pure joy and was a true soldier of Hashem. He lived with purpose, aiming to bring Moshiach and was always eager to perform mitzvahs,” per a fundraising page. “His boundless energy and loving nature touched everyone who knew him. Now, where his laughter and sweetness once were, there’s a deep silence and unbearable pain.”
