In a heartfelt tribute to Sahar Ashuan, who just days before his 23rd birthday was killed by Hamas terrorists while attending the Nova music festival on Oct. 7, 2023, HaShomer HaChadash organized an agricultural volunteer day in southern Israel on Oct. 28. The event, which drew 700 participants, unfolded across three different farms, celebrating Sahar’s deep love for the land, his generous spirit and his commitment to mutual responsibility.

Eyewitnesses recount his heroic actions that day as he worked to calm, evacuate and treat the injured, demonstrating courage and selflessness.

Ashuan chose to work as a farmer in HaShomer HaChadash’s “People of the Land” program, motivated by his love for the Jewish state. Upon joining the organization, he said: “I choose a preferred job that also has value for the state.”

Despite the physical challenges of farming, Sahar found beauty in every moment—capturing breathtaking sunrises in the orchards, immersing himself in the nature he cherished and spreading joy to those around him. His teammates affectionately called him “Sahar the Joyful,” and he left an indelible mark on everyone he met. As noted by his team at the kibbutz, “Sahar was a dedicated and responsible worker—always cheerful and funny, yet also professional and serious.”

The volunteer day served as a reminder of community strength and resilience. Hundreds came together to honor Sahar’s memory through their labor, embodying the spirit of mutual support that he exemplified.

Nir Snir, CEO of the “People of the Land” program at HaShomer HaChadash, said: “Sahar embodies the vision of the People of the Land. Together with his family, we created an extraordinary grassroots Israeli volunteer event in his memory. Sahar loved the land and agriculture, and there is no better way to honor his legacy than to spread the goodness he brought to so many.”
