In a heartwarming and unexpected moment of joy, a group of Jewish teens with chronic illnesses and disabilities visiting Israel through Chai Lifeline’s Hartman Family Foundation Wish at the Wall program, were granted a personal visit from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The teens, who overcome medical challenges every day, presented Netanyahu with a special havdalah candle crafted by the group last summer while at Camp Simcha. The emotional meeting was a highlight of their journey, made even more significant by the unique challenges they face and the incredible resilience they have shown.
“This trip is so much more than just a journey to Israel; it’s a celebration of resilience, hope and the unwavering spirit of these young individuals,” said Rabbi Simcha Scholar, CEO of Chai Lifeline. “These teens have faced unimaginable medical challenges, and today’s visit from Prime Minister Netanyahu is a moment they will never forget. It is a powerful reminder that despite any hardship, they are capable of remarkable things.”
The group’s visit to Israel is part of Chai Lifeline’s Wish at the Wall program, which offers teenagers living with serious illnesses or disabilities, and their families, the opportunity to explore Israel’s sacred landmarks and connect with their heritage. The trip, which is running from Feb. 26 to March 9, includes a series of meaningful activities, such as visiting the Kotel, Masada and the Dead Sea, as well as meeting wounded Israel Defense Forces soldiers and showing support for families of hostages.
The teens, many of whom utilize wheelchairs, walkers or respirators, have had their every medical need attended to during the trip, ensuring they can fully participate in all aspects of the journey.
Rabbi Shay Schachter, Camp Simcha rabbi and prominent advocate for hostage families, is accompanying the group, providing spiritual guidance throughout the trip.

The Wish at the Wall program holds special significance this year, having been postponed in 2024 due to the outbreak of war following the tragic events of Oct. 7. This year’s trip is a symbol of resilience and the power of community in the face of adversity.
