“If we want to be serious, to make policy, to understand where we are, listen to members of Congress who are solid, mainstream Democrats and Republicans. Ask them about how to work together on domestic and foreign policy,” said Ann Lewis.
Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York have exhibited anti-Israel sentiment and actions that will influence some, be it their constituents or their colleagues in Congress.
Many worry that the leftward shift among Democrats in their opposition to Trump during this election season may bring the party closer towards the anti-Israel views found on the party’s far-left, as exemplified by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.
In an interview with PBS’s “Firing Line,” Ocasio-Cortez raised concern when she said, “I also think that what people are starting to see—at least in the occupation of Palestine—is just an increasing crisis of humanitarian condition and that to me is just where I tend to come from on this issue.”
The primary victory of Ocasio-Cortez over Crowley may represent a broader shift in the Democratic Party towards the more progressive wing championed by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who has strongly condemned Israel’s actions in recent months.
