While in Jerusalem, the U.S. secretary of state was set to deliver a taped speech for the Republican National Convention—a move that breaches decades of protocol.
“Israel will do all in its power to assist the U.S. government in stopping Iran’s malign activities and aspirations,” said Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Gilad Erdan.
The warning by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo came one day after the United States initiated the mechanism for the U.N. Security Council to snapback sanctions on Iran.
“Anyone against snapback is for Chinese and Russian arms sales to Iran to threaten America, Israel and other U.S. allies,” said Richard Goldberg, a senior advisor at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.
Enacting them would include extending the arms embargo on Tehran indefinitely, following the Aug. 14 rejection by the U.N. Security Council of the U.S.-led resolution to extend it.
The Iranian defense minister calls the missiles, one of which was named after assassinated IRGC commander Qassem Soleimani, the “basis for military self-reliance and a must for [maintaining] the country’s independence.”
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is set to travel to New York to notify the U.N. Security Council that America is invoking snapback.
As the fighter jets approached the site in Germany, IAF Commander Maj. Gen. Amikam Norkin said, “From the past’s memory of darkness we carry on our wings a future obligation, forever and ever.”
An Arab-Muslim-majority country that borders Egypt to the south, Sudan has long been viewed as hostile towards the Jewish state.
The Russian effort comes as the U.N. Security Council rejected on Friday a U.S.-led resolution to indefinitely extend the U.N. arms embargo on Iran, which is set to expire on Oct. 18.
“We are in direct discussions with representatives of the American government about our shared interests, including communications infrastructure,” said Israeli Communications Minister Yoaz Hendel.
