Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish literature lauds nonfiction in virtual award ceremony
George Rohr presented the award to winner Menachem Kaiser for his book “Plunder: A Memoir of Family Property and Nazi Treasure.”
Written in Portuguese, the document is known as “Memoria de Todos os Autos-da-Fé Que Setem Feito em Lisboa” (“An Accounting of All the Autos-da-Fé That Took Place in Lisbon”).

It also noted a resurgence in the book market was evident in 2021, following a COVID-related slump in 2020.
The items featured include fragments from a 1,000-year-old Yemenite Torah scroll found in a bookbinding, as well as one of the world’s smallest legible Torah scrolls, measuring just 6 centimeters (2⅓ inches) in height.

Sami Rohr Prize and National Library of Israel jump-start new literary endeavor
The $100,000 prize is given to an emerging writer who demonstrates the potential for continued contribution to Jewish literature.

500-year-old letter offers rare look into life of legendary Kabbalist
The 16th-century missive, found in the binding of another old volume, seeks to enlist Rabbi Isaac Luria Ashkenazi’s support in raising money for the Jews of the Holy Land.
A majority of users in the Arab world were between the ages of 25 and 44. About 60 percent of all users in the Arab world were male.
It contains works in various languages including Greek, Arabic, Syriac, Georgian, Armenian and more, which library officials say is a “treasure trove” of text related to early Christianity.
Each clip is about two to three minutes long with items presented in Spanish, Italian, Polish, Hebrew, German, French, Russian and English.
