More than 200 students from across the United States returned home in early June after spending a life-changing spring semester abroad at the Alexander Muss High School in Israel, Jewish National Fund-USA’s premier college-prep study abroad experience for American teens. Whether attending the full semester program or participating in trips with their Jewish day schools, students were immersed in a blend of rigorous academics, hands-on history and deep cultural connection.
From the first week, students were transported beyond the classroom, walking in the footsteps of their ancestors while continuing their traditional high school studies. Muss combines accredited coursework with a transformative experiential Israel studies curriculum that brings thousands of years of Jewish history to life. It provides teens not only with academic continuity but also an edge on college applications when applying to universities, while preparing them for the independence that enables them to thrive once accepted.
Students explored biblical and modern historical sites—from Masada and the Western Wall to Tel Aviv and communities in Israel’s south that the Jewish National Fund-USA is rebuilding after Oct. 7—gaining perspective on ancient texts, modern geopolitics and Jewish resilience. They learned to think critically, engage deeply and speak confidently about their values and heritage—skills that serve them far beyond the classroom.
“I feel so lucky and grateful to be part of Muss and to experience such an incredible program,” said Huntingdon Valley, Pa., native Eden K. “It allowed us to explore Israel while learning about its history and diverse culture. I thought I knew a lot about Israeli history before coming here, but I learned more while attending Muss than I have in the past 15 years. Muss has helped me connect with my Judaism in a way I never imagined.”
Beyond academic enrichment, Muss sparked a powerful connection
to the students’ Jewish identity and Zionist heritage. For many, it was the first time they experienced Jewish pride in a truly immersive environment. They saw Israel not just as a place on the map, but as a living homeland—vibrant, complex and deeply personal. They returned home not only with knowledge but also with the pride and courage to be active leaders in their schools and communities.
“Being at Muss has made me feel more connected, not just to Israel’s history, but to its people and culture,” said Olivia S., a student from Nashville, Tenn. “It’s made me realize how much Israel’s past continues to shape its present and how honored I am to have witnessed that firsthand.”
Now, as the students return home with college on the horizon, the Muss alumni are prepared for the academic rigor and the ever-present threat of anti-Israel campaigns. They feel equipped and excited to advocate for Israel and take their rightful places among the young Jewish leaders across the nation.
“This semester has truly been a life-changing experience—one that I know will stay with me in many aspects of my future,” said Tenafly, N.J., student Natalie F. “The friendships I’ve made, the independence I’ve gained and everything I’ve learned will always be a part of me.”
