“The BDS campaign … is an ideological issue that touches a raw nerve connected to Germany’s troubled past. It should come as no surprise, then, that Germany took a leadership role in countering the campaign,” states the report.
The pandemic, social media, hate online, economic dislocation and physical disruption have come together to create new challenges for the community.
“We are troubled that AB-1460 could lead to further exclusion of, and discrimination against, Jewish students on campus, exacerbating a pattern of isolation and ostracization of Jews that has become far too commonplace,” said AJC director of campus affairs Zev Hurwitz.
Even though her semester will be online this fall because of the coronavirus pandemic, pro-Israel student and CAMERA Fellow Sophie Sklar of McGill University says she will “be writing as much as ever and fighting as much as ever for this cause I care so deeply about.”
Michigan state Rep. Abdullah Hammoud called laws to combat BDS a “complete and unilateral infringement” on First Amendment rights.
“We are deeply concerned that without adequate safeguards, these courses could become vehicles for one-sided political advocacy and activism that will both subvert the academic mission of the university, and incite bigotry and harm against some CSU students,” they wrote.
