A National Gallery of Art curator told JNS that it is “quite striking” that the only painting in the 1874 Impressionism show that related to religion was by a Jewish artist known for portraying Jewish scenes.
The New York artist, who drew for “The New York Times” for decades, developed a close connection with the Altneuschul in Prague and often drew on Jewish history and faith, including in works syndicated in JNS.
“We found the name of Jesus before Christianity was part of the Roman Empire,” Alegre Savariego, of the Israel Antiquities Authority, told JNS.
“It’s in vogue to believe that the Jews are evil and the Jewish state is evil,” the lawyer Lori Lowenthal Marcus told JNS. “They’re feeling like they’re on the side of justice.”
“The organized, systematic theft of property was one component of the process of the dehumanization of Jews during the Second World War,” according to the exhibition catalog.
One-in-five Jews live outside their country of origin, compared to 6% of Christians and 4% of Muslims, per the Pew Research Center, which studied data through 2020.
Two prominent Orthodox rabbis told JNS that they wrote the invocations to be both mournful and also uplifting.
“Like or hate or anywhere in between, I don’t think anyone can really doubt Netanyahu’s rhetorical skills,” said Robert Greenway of the Heritage Foundation.
