Israel held a solemn farewell Sunday for Bipin Joshi, a Nepali agricultural student killed while held captive by Hamas, as relatives and friends gathered outside Ben-Gurion International Airport to honor his memory.

The ceremony took place at the 8th Armored Brigade Memorial, where officials, soldiers and members of the public bowed their heads in grief. A wreath-laying ceremony and moment of silence preceded Joshi’s journey home to Nepal for burial.

Joshi, who had been studying at Kibbutz Alumim as part of an international agricultural training program run by Mashav, Israel’s international development agency within the Foreign Ministry, was kidnapped during the Hamas-led assault on Oct. 7, 2023. He was 23 at the time of his abduction.

He was abducted by Hamas terrorists from a bomb shelter in Alumim, where his heroic actions blocking a live grenade despite being wounded saved several lives. He was murdered in captivity during the first months of the war, according to an assessment shared by the IDF.

On Oct. 14, Israeli authorities confirmed that one of the four bodies of captives Hamas returned the previous night was Joshi’s.

He was the only Hindu confirmed to have been taken captive by the Gaza terrorists.
