The incident took place in a primarily Jewish neighborhood of London that boasts the largest concentration of Chassidic Jews in Europe.
“This incident clearly did not take place in a vacuum,” said Campaign Against Antisemitism. “We have repeatedly warned of the dangers of hatred going almost unchecked on the streets of London.”
The Community Security Initiative in New York provided $400,000 in grants.
The assailants demanded money and made antisemitic statements; security camera footage captured some of the incidents.
The Flatbush Shomrim is assisting a new Asian community watch program as both minorities remain targets of increasing hate crimes.
Shomrim is calling on area law enforcement to do more “to hold this gang to account for 100s of racist attacks.”
“This kind of vicious act of violence won’t be tolerated in our city,” posted New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Twitter.
“To our Jewish community—I know this is exhausting. No one should have to worry about being attacked for their religious beliefs, ever,” said New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
FBI assistant director-in-charge William F. Sweeney said “a man who founded an organization aimed at creating a safer community should know the difference between right and wrong.”
The emergency “shul phones” will allow callers to press one button to be connected to 911, or to the local Shomrim or Hatzalah services.
Police said all of the reports are being investigated by the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force.
