The sanctions are part of a broader Israeli effort, which includes U.S. involvement, to counter attempts by Hamas and others to destabilize the Gaza Strip.
“While Bryn Mawr stands firmly in support of free expression as a hallmark of the student experience, we have clear guidelines around protest,” college president Wendy Cadge wrote.
“Some actions that took place over the weekend violated the student code of conduct and the college’s time, place and manner policies,” a college spokesman told JNS.
“Academic freedom does not include platforming terrorists,” stated the LawFare Project, which called the event “institutional normalization of terrorism.”
Nate Lebowitz called a recent fundraising appeal “a knife plunged into my heart” as Jewish students have described “hostility and isolation” on campus since Oct. 7.
A university spokesman told JNS that “the condemnation of such a peaceful event to share a story of resilience in the face of extreme suffering is antithetical to the values of our Bruin community.”
The regional coalition issued a declaration condemning the BDS movement and supporting Israel’s right to defend itself.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry called the incident “utterly unacceptable.”
