IDF lifts ban on information regarding use of UAVs for airstrikes

The Israel military is said to have used UAVs such as Elbit Systems’ Hermes 450 and Hermes 900 to carry out targeted assassinations.

The Israeli military on Wednesday lifted a long-standing ban on the publication of information regarding the Israel Defense Forces’ use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to carry out airstrikes.

Immediately following the announcement, Hebrew media began identifying Israeli-made UAVs used in strikes, including the Hermes 450 made by Israeli aerospace company Elbit Systems.

The drone has been used in “the majority of targeted assassinations conducted by Israel in Gaza and other places,” according to Channel 12. The Hermes 450’s small size and weapons payload make it well-suited for such operations as it reduces the potential for collateral damage, wrote the report.

Other UAVs used for strikes include Elbit’s Hermes 900 and Israel Aerospace Industries’ Heron platform.

According to a report by Jane’s Defence Weekly in April, Germany decided to arm its Heron TP medium-altitude, long-endurance UAVs, which the country leases from Israel.

“The Luftwaffe is to operate five Heron TPs from an undisclosed base in Israel with the type set to become operational later in 2022,” said the report.

Germany had leased Heron 1 UAVs that it used in Afghanistan and Mali for intelligence-gathering purposes, and had originally planned to use the Heron TP in the same way.

While the German military “did not say why the decision to enable the Heron TPs to be armed had been made at this time, it is likely part of a wider beefing up of Germany’s defense posture following Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine,” added the report.

“Such hate has no place in our schools or our state, especially as we begin Jewish American Heritage Month,” said Maryland Gov. Wes Moore.
“While our ability to provide additional information at this time is limited, we will continue to keep the community informed,” the private D.C. university stated.
“This is not a prank. It was an act of intimidation meant to spread fear,” Vince Gasparro, a Liberal parliamentarian, told JNS.
“We welcomed this traitor into our nation with open arms,” the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan said. “And he repaid us by building a bomb and helping our great enemy.”
The “failed approach” to lasting peace between the countries has “allowed terrorist groups to entrench and enrich themselves, undermine the authority of the Lebanese state and endanger Israel’s northern border,” said State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott.
“One has to wonder how that humble pie tastes for the Democrats today,” Sam Markstein of the Republican Jewish Coalition told JNS.
