“Nearly the entire population in Gaza is facing emergency levels of food insecurity and is in need of assistance,” per the U.S. Agency for International Development.
The USAID head last visited the region five months ago.
Samantha Power, the USAID administrator, announced the additional $90 million on the same day that the Pentagon said the temporary pier will cost $90 million less than projected.
“Our hearts, of course, go out with those mourning their loved ones this week after Israel’s strike in Rafah on Sunday killed at least 45 people,” Samantha Power said.
“It’s not for the secretary-general to tell USAID where it’s sending its money,” a U.N. spokesman told JNS.
At her confirmation hearing, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) asked Samantha Power about U.N. Resolution 2334 and the Obama administration’s decision to abstain from voting in 2016, which allowed it to be passed.
“She will work with our partners to confront the COVID-19 pandemic, lift up vulnerable communities ... and advance American ideals and interests around the globe,” said President-elect Joe Biden.
