U.S. President Donald Trump stated he wants to “cap” the percentage of foreign students admitted to Harvard University and for the Trump administration to learn the origins of all foreign students admitted.
Speaking to White House reporters on Wednesday, Trump claimed that 31% of Harvard students are “foreign-based,” and that the administration wants to “know where those students come from.”
“They’re taking people from areas of the world that are very radicalized, and we don’t want them making trouble in our country,” he said.
“I think they should have a cap of maybe around 15%, not 31%,” he said. He added that people “can’t get in” to Harvard because of its foreign students.
“I want to make sure that the foreign students are people that can love our country,” Trump said. “We don’t want to see shopping centers exploding. We don’t want to see the kind of riots that you had.”
The Harvard Crimson, a student paper, reported that, according to university documents, about 27% of Harvard students are international students, the school’s highest such enrollment ever.
