American Jewish University’s (AJU) Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies announced today the appointment of Ilene Berman as the vice chair of its advisory board. Berman’s role as vice chair is effective immediately, and on July 1, 2025, she will advance to advisory board chair for a two-year term.

As an accomplished businesswoman and Jewish community leader, Berman is uniquely positioned to lead the Ziegler School through an era of transformation and innovation. She most recently served as the president of Valley Beth Shalom in Encino, Calif., overseeing leadership transitions, board development, marketing and long-term planning. Ilene has held leadership positions at Jewish National Fund Los Angeles, Milken Community High School, Solomon Schechter Day School Association, Jewish Federation Los Angeles, Sylvia Weiss Philanthropy, and she was Encino Community Council Education representative.

She and her husband, Dennis, are also the founders of Bandwagon Brokerage, a successful wholesale produce distribution company.

“I am deeply honored to take on the role of advisory board vice chair at such a pivotal time for the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies,” said Berman. “As vice chair, I look forward to ensuring the Ziegler School continues to nurture compassionate and visionary leaders who will inspire Jewish communities across North America.”

Berman graduated from UCLA with a degree in sociology and ethnic studies and has completed executive education at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. As a result of her dedication to Jewish education and leadership, Berman has earned numerous awards, including the Rita Reznikoff Leadership Award for dedication to Valley Beth Shalom Day School and the Jewish Federation’s Valley Alliance Women’s Leadership Award and as a participant in Women’s League for Conservative Judaism Leadership Institute.
