With little hope left for reaching a compromise, here are the five possible scenarios.
The suspect, a resident of the city in his 60s, allegedly spray-painted “Enemy of the People” on a wall outside Justice Minister Yariv Levin’s residence.
Yariv Levin met with four people involved in drafting the compromise proposal.
One measure, dubbed the “override clause,” would allow the Knesset to re-legislate laws struck down by the Supreme Court.
“Everything should be done in due time,” says Justice Minister Yariv Levin • “Threat of dismissal will not deter the attorney general from fulfilling her duties,” says Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara’s office.
The overture was rejected by opposition head Yair Lapid, who is demanding the proposed legislation be frozen as a precondition for talks.
“Red lines have been crossed in recent days by extremist elements that have one goal: To intentionally bring about anarchy,” says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
MK Simcha Rothman’s proposed legislation goes even farther than that put forward by Justice Minister Yariv Levin, and as a “private bill” does not require review by the attorney general.
‘The changes will bring Israel in line with the leading democracies.’
The bill calls for an “override clause” to reverse Supreme Court decisions to overturn legislation, and changes the way judges are appointed.
Justice Minister Yariv Levin has announced a far-reaching program with an emphasis on reining in the Supreme Court.
The plan includes an ‘override clause’ giving the Knesset the power to reverse the Supreme Court if it strikes down laws as ‘unconstitutional.’
