Jewish watchdog urges University of Chicago to denounce SJP’s boycott of ‘Zionist classes’

“You have an opportunity to show moral leadership and set an example to the greater community that SJP does not reflect the values of your campus,” wrote StandWithUs to the university’s president and dean.

StandWithUs has called on the University of Chicago to condemn Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) for telling its supporters to boycott “sh**ty Zionist classes.”

In an email sent last week to university president Robert J. Zimmer and dean of students Michele Rasmussen, StandWithUs highlighted an Instagram post that the campus SJP chapter uploaded on Jan. 26 titled “DON’T TAKE SH**TY ZIONIST CLASSES.” It encouraged students to “boycott these classes that serve as vehicles to spread Zionist propaganda on American college campuses.”

SJP also listed three classes, along with their professors and course descriptions, that were on the chopping block: “Multiculturalism in Israel,” “Narrating Israel and Palestine Through Literature and Film” and “Gender Relations in Israel.” SJP flyers promoting the boycott of these classes were plastered around at least one University of Chicago building, and one classroom had a flyer on every chair, reported StandWithUs.

The pro-Israel group further said SJP is encouraging students to boycott University of Chicago faculty members “because of their Jewish or Israeli identities.”

It went on to explain that “if they meant a boycott of classes which promote Israeli government policies, they would say so. Instead, they cite ‘Zionist propaganda’ and the conspiratorial ‘Zionist agenda,’ both dripping with anti-Semitic undertones.”

“A boycott of ‘Zionist’ classes and the professors who teach them can amount to discrimination based on religion, ethnicity and/or national origin,” StandWithUs wrote before saying the boycott campaign is “a blatant attempt to normalize anti-Semitic discrimination and targets your own faculty and course offerings.”

“As such, it deserves, and in fact, necessitates, your immediate public condemnation of SJP’s actions specifically—not blanket and vague statements. You have an opportunity here to show moral leadership and set an example to the greater community that SJP does not reflect the values of your campus.”

An American Jewish Committee spokesman told JNS that the group is “grateful for the severity with which the Justice Department is handling this case.”
NYPD said the investigation into the death of Albert Itzkowitz, 75, a former Hatzolah volunteer and kosher bakery owner, remains ongoing and that no arrests have been made.
“At a time when Jewish Americans are facing a deeply troubling rise in violence and harassment, it is critical to recognize organizations that have spent generations standing up to hate and defending the truth,” Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. said.
Rabbi Jason Rosner, of Congregation B’nai Emet, told JNS that “we are prepared to evacuate our Torahs if necessary.”
The PAC’s co-chairs stated that Ammar Campa-Najjar is “the only candidate campaigning on a progressive agenda in this race.”
“This settlement reaffirms a basic principle, which is that American law cannot tolerate taxpayer dollars flowing to a system that rewards terrorism,” Mark Goldfeder, CEO and director of the National Jewish Advocacy Center, told JNS.
