Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Tuesday condemned as “abhorrent” antisemitic comments posted on social media on Saturday by Iran’s ambassador to Australia.

In his tweet, Ahmad Sadeghi described Israel as a “genocidal regime,” saying he looked forward to the day the “Zionist plague” is wiped off the “holy lands of Palestine.”

Albanese told press in Sydney that Sadeghi had been called in to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

“I make it clear—there’s no place for the sort of comments that were made on social media by the Iranian ambassador,” he said. “They’re abhorrent, and they are hateful, they are antisemitic, and they have no place.”

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong also condemned the remarks, describing them as “repugnant” and “inflammatory.”

“They are inconsistent with Australia’s values and our views,” she said.

However, asked if she would support his credentials being withdrawn, Wong only said, “I don’t support what he has said.”
