Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) praised the signing of a peace deal between Israel and Hamas on Thursday while criticizing the actions of the Israeli government over the past two years.

The legislator said the agreement “is long overdue but welcome news.”

“While not every issue has been resolved, Israel and Hamas have taken the first and needed step towards peace,” she wrote.

Baldwin added that Israel was “well within its rights and bounds to defend itself” after the Hamas-led massacre in southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

“But over the past two years, we have seen the Netanyahu government inflict unspeakable harm to Palestinian civilians, fail to recover the remaining hostages and push the Middle East to the brink of a regional war,” Baldwin wrote. “My heart still hurts for the victims, their families, their loved ones and the communities that will never be the same.”

She urged the Trump administration to ensure “that both sides honor their respective commitments” and recommit the country to supporting a path to a Palestinian state.
