Why are Israel and the U.S. protecting Mahmoud Abbas?

An Endowment for Middle East Truth (EMET) Webinar with Shoshana Bryen

For years, Israel and the United States have promoted and protected the Palestinian Authority and its leader, Mahmoud Abbas, despite the P.A.'s murderous incitement against Israel and Jews and its ongoing violation of America’s Taylor Force Act, forbidding payment of “salaries” to terrorists and their families. How does that mesh with Israel’s primary obligation—to protect the citizens of Israel? Is there a larger strategy at work?

Jewish Policy Center Senior Director Shoshana Bryen joins EMET President Sarah Stern to discuss Israel’s calculated determination to protect Abbas and the P.A.—as well as King Abdullah II of Jordan—and how that decision relates to Iran’s regional aspirations.

About our speaker: Shoshana Bryen is senior director of the Jewish Policy Center in Washington, D.C., and editor of inFOCUS Quarterly. A writer and speaker, she also hosts a webinar series that brings audiences a wide variety of topics, foreign and domestic, and conversations with academics, political figures and media commentators.

A specialist in American defense policy and Middle East affairs, she was previously executive director and senior director for security policy at the Jewish Institute for National Security of America, where she was author of JINSA Reports. She has worked with the Strategic Studies Institute of the U.S. Army War College, the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv and lectured at the National Defense University in Washington.

Her work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, the Washington Times, The New York Sun and Defense News, among other print outlets.

She is a member of the Advisory Board of the Aleethia Foundation that provides opportunities for wounded veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and of The American Jewish International Relations Institute.

The U.S.-led forum focused on how to “effectively disrupt and deter Iran’s terrorist plots and other illicit schemes,” the U.S. State Department said.
“People have every right to protest, but what’s happening here goes beyond that,” Regina Sassoon Friedland, of the American Jewish Committee, told JNS. “The Jewish people will not be intimidated to halt our events and activities.”
