A 53-year-old man was arrested in Tokyo on Thursday after crashing his vehicle into a barricade close to the entrance of the Israeli embassy.

One police officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the attack.

Authorities said the suspect was a member of a right-wing organization, without elaborating, Reuters reported.

Police later identified him as Sekiguchi Shinobu, a member of the Seidokai Gijuku far-right group.

Israeli Ambassador to Japan Gilad Cohen said he was “shocked” by the incident and thanked police for ensuring the legation staff’s security.

The incident happened near the site of a handful of pro-Hamas demonstrations in recent weeks, according to Reuters. In response, police had stepped up security in the area, including erecting the temporary barricades.

Last month, an Israeli embassy official was attacked in Beijing as Hamas called for a day of global “mobilization” against the Jewish people.

The attack did not occur inside the embassy compound, and the diplomat was in stable condition after being evacuated to the hospital.

A week later, Cypriot police arrested four Syrians after an improvised explosive device was thrown 30 meters away from Israel’s embassy in Nicosia.

Following the blast, two people walking near the Israeli mission were detained, as were two others in a car.

Police found two knives and a hammer inside the vehicle.
