U.S. President Joe Biden’s growing tilt against Israel is not just a matter of troubling rhetoric. According to JNS editor-in-chief Jonathan Tobin, it’s now a push for a ceasefire in the war against Hamas that will grant a victory to the terrorists. He’s joined by columnist and author David Harsanyi of The Federalist, who argues that Biden has never had a consistent view of foreign policy, and is surrounded by people who are antagonistic to Israel and wish to appease Iran and its allies.
Harsanyi believes that it’s wrong for the administration to try and link aid to Israel to aid to Ukraine, regardless of what you think about Russia’s invasion of that country. He also notes that Ukraine isn’t being pressured to make peace with Russia, even though no one can define what victory in that war would look like. Meanwhile, Israel, which he noted “has the moral high ground” in its war against Hamas, is being pressured by Washington to make dangerous concessions to the Palestinians in a way no other country would be treated.
As for those advocating for a halt to Israel’s war, Harsanyi says, “Anyone who wants a ceasefire before Hamas is destroyed is pro-Hamas.” And for Biden to be trying to placate antisemitic voters, who are threatening not to vote for the Democrats in November, demonstrates the president’s lack of principles.
While Harsanyi says he is not a fan of former President Donald Trump, he worries that despite Biden’s talk about defending democracy, the president is doing the opposite. Biden’s contempt for the Constitution on issues like the border and student loans, as well as the Democrats’ attempts to throw their main opponent in jail or off the ballot, is dangerous. That’s because of the way it trashes the legitimate process of government operations and because it sets up a situation this year in which neither side is likely to accept defeat in the presidential election.
