Man arrested for painting swastikas on Israeli flags in Jerusalem

The suspect is a resident of the capital’s Abu Tor neighborhood.

Israeli police on Saturday night arrested a resident of Jerusalem’s Abu Tor neighborhood suspected of painting swastikas on several Israeli flags displayed in the south of the capital.

Jerusalem District police opened an investigation last week into several cases of flags being desecrated with swastikas.

Police have arrested dozens of suspects on charges of incitement and support for terrorism in the wake of Hamas’s Oct. 7 terror assault on southern Israel.

Among those arrested were a 20-year-old female resident of Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah/Shimon HaTzadik neighborhood, for allegedly sharing pictures of fallen IDF soldiers on social media and praising their Palestinian killers.

In another case, officers detained a cook who worked in a central Jerusalem restaurant. After losing his job due to his public support for Hamas terror, he reportedly threatened to carry out an attack on the diner.

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir recently warned of possible Arab riots in mixed Jewish-Arab cities, and ordered Israel Police Commissioner Yaakov Shabtai to make preparations for “a scenario of ‘Guardian of the Walls II,’ which I think is looming.”

Ben-Gvir’s remarks referred to the widespread Arab rioting in Israeli cities with large numbers of Arab and Jewish residents during the IDF’s May 2021 operation against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
