Temple Beth-El, San Antonio’s first Jewish congregation, is proud to celebrate its 150th anniversary with a year of reflection, service and community celebration. The milestone will culminate in a spectacular 150th Anniversary Gala on March 22, honoring its rich legacy while looking forward to a vibrant future.
Founded in 1874 by 44 pioneering Jewish families, Temple Beth-El has been a cornerstone of the city’s Jewish community and an enduring symbol of social justice, inclusivity and progressive ideals. Today, nearly 1,000 member families call Temple Beth-El home, and it remains a beacon of connection and spirituality in the heart of San Antonio.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate our past while envisioning our future,” said Eric Ryniker, executive director of Temple Beth-El. “We’re thrilled to honor our incredible legacy and the community that has made it possible for 150 years.”
Temple Beth-El’s story is deeply intertwined with the history of San Antonio. From its modest beginnings in a rented space to becoming a founding member of the Union for Reform Judaism, Temple Beth-El has served as a place of worship, education and community outreach for generations.
The congregation’s commitment to tikkun olam, or “repairing the world,” has led to decades of impactful social justice initiatives. From advocating for civil rights to fighting hunger and homelessness, Temple Beth-El has built strong partnerships with organizations like the San Antonio Food Bank, Meals on Wheels and local youth programs.
The congregation gathered 1,910 pounds of food for the San Antonio Food Bank last year, providing more than 21,000 meals to those in need. Volunteers also deliver 400 Meals on Wheels each month and host CreativKids SA, a free summer camp that serves over 200 children, regardless of their connection to the temple or Judaism.
The 150th Anniversary Gala promises to be an unforgettable evening of culture and artistry. The night will begin with a festive cocktail hour, followed by an elegant, seated dinner accompanied by the enchanting melodies of a live string quartet. Guests will marvel at the creativity of world-renowned artist Joe Castillo with a breathtaking live “Sand Story” performance that brings our history to life.

Mark Eichelbaum, Temple Beth-El president, emphasized the significance of the event: “Temple Beth-El has been a pillar for both the Jewish and greater San Antonio community. Our iconic dome is a symbol of social justice and inclusivity, and I am honored to be part of this milestone celebration.”
As Temple Beth-El celebrates this extraordinary milestone, it remains focused on its mission to serve as a spiritual home for all who seek connection and meaning. Senior Rabbi Mara Nathan, who made history as the first woman to lead a major congregation in Texas, expressed her gratitude.
“I am filled with gratitude for the generations of leaders and congregants who have shaped Temple Beth-El into the vibrant and welcoming community it is today,” she says. “As we honor our history, we are also inspired to look ahead with hope, purpose, and a renewed commitment to justice and compassion.”
Temple Beth-El invites the entire San Antonio community to join in celebrating this historic occasion. For more information about the 150th anniversary gala and to buy tickets, visit beth-elsa.org/150years.
