Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu underwent a routine colonoscopy at Jerusalem’s Shaarei Zedek Medical Center on Friday, the Prime Minister’s Office said.

In the statement, the prime minister thanked Professor Eran Goldin, who chairs Shaarei Zedek’s Digestive Disease Institute; Professor Yaacov Gozal, the director of its Anesthesia Department; Dr. Ariel Benson, who leads the hospital’s Endoscopic Unit; and a nurse by the name of Galit Peres.

During the medical procedure, Netanyahu was accompanied by his personal physician, Dr. Zvi Herman Berkowitz, the statement noted.

The Prime Minister’s Office did not say whether Netanyahu was under general anesthesia or moderate sedation during the procedure. Israeli Justice Minister Yariv Levin replaced Netanyahu as acting premier on Friday morning.

Netanyahu, 75, underwent an operation on Dec. 29 to remove his prostate after a urinary tract infection caused by a benign prostate enlargement was identified during a routine examination days earlier.

On March 31, 2024, the prime minister underwent successful hernia surgery at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem’s Ein Kerem.

On Dec. 31, 2023, following routine annual checkups by his medical team and personal physician, Netanyahu received a clean bill of health after undergoing an emergency cardiac procedure earlier in the year.
