The Jewish Community Relations Council is under fire for honoring Bill Thompson, City University of New York board chair, with a public service award shortly after a CUNY law-school student, Fatima Mousa Mohammed, delivered an antisemitic commencement address.

The JCRC bestowed the honor at its spring gala on June 12 at the New-York Historical Society.

“This is an outrageous insult and obsequious act against the Jewish community. No one in the CUNY administration should be honored by JCRC,” said Jeffrey Wiesenfeld, a former CUNY trustee of 15 years.

Wiesenfeld said CUNY should have fired the dean of the law school, Sudha Setty, who applauded the speech. Thompson was among those who signed a statement well after the student’s talk, calling it “hate speech.”

The court ruled that the parents failed to “plausibly allege” that their children lacking access to services at private school infringes on their rights.
Kenneth Marcus, founder and chairman of the Brandeis Center, told JNS that “we understand that those who characterize us that way, rather than as the civil rights organization we are, generally aim to marginalize us or undermine our efforts.”
Michael Specht, Ramapo Town Council supervisor, called the incident “very disturbing.”

The latest attacks “show us what a cruel regime it is and what kind of danger it is,” the Israeli president said.
