The U.S. Department of Education opened an investigation of the Port Washington Union Free School District on Long Island, N.Y., on Nov. 25 for alleged violations of Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

The department probes public schools and private ones that receive federal funding for a variety of violations under the law, including discrimination based on “shared ancestry,” including religion.

Many of the investigations since the Hamas-led terrorist attacks in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, have centered on reported instances of Jew-hatred. The department typically does not release the details of the complaints it investigates.

JNS sought comment from the district.

The day before the investigation was opened, the district’s superintendent of schools was arrested and charged with drunk driving, the New York Post reported.
