Following the attack on Jews in Amsterdam last night that many are calling a “pogrom” and the cancellation of a government rescue mission, Magen David Adom Dir. Gen. Eli Bin held an urgent situation assessment with the relevant authorities in Israel.

At least five Israelis were injured Thursday night after being attacked in the streets reportedly by groups of men of Arab and Muslim extraction.

After consulting with El Al management, it was decided to send a team of paramedics and medical personnel from Magen David Adom on a special El Al flight to assist with medical care and accompany the injured Israelis. In addition, a delegation of doctors from MDA’s International Unit in Europe is already on its way to the hospital in Amsterdam to support and assist the wounded on the ground.

“The incident in Amsterdam is severe and shocking. Immediately after receiving the information, I held a situation assessment and decided to send our leading medical teams as part of the rescue mission,” said Bin. “Magen David Adom, as Israel’s national rescue organization, is ready to assist any Israeli citizen, anywhere in the world. Special thanks to El Al for their cooperation and assistance in this complex and important mission.”

El Al board chairman Amikam Ben-Zvi said, “El Al continues to contribute to the national effort and is adding Magen David Adom’s paramedic and medical team to the rescue flights. This is an important mission, and we are proud to be part of it.”

Said El Al CEO Dina Ben-Tal Ganancia: “El Al is proud to cooperate with Magen David Adom and serve as a crucial anchor in the rescue operation and provision of medical services to Israelis in Amsterdam. It is both our privilege and our duty.”

In the United States, disaster relief, ambulance and blood services are handled by an array of organizations. In Israel, there’s one organization that does it all: Magen David Adom. Although MDA’s role is mandated by the Israeli government, it’s not a government agency. As Israel’s official representative to the International Red Cross, MDA’s role precludes it from accepting governmental support for its general operations. Because of this arrangement, the agency relies on support from donors, including those from the United States, to keep its dispatch systems, training and equipment the best in the world.

El Al Airlines was founded in November 1948 as Israel’s national airline and operated its first scheduled flight in 1949. In June 1950, it began service between Tel Aviv and New York. Today, the airline serves 49 international destinations in 33 countries and continues to grow. Although it was privatized economically several years ago, its national spirit and commitment to Israel have never wavered. It continues its many national activities, striving for excellence through the service it offers its passengers.
