“Anti-BDS legislation is about commercial activities, not about people’s ability to speak,” says the 33-year-old. “People are free to criticize Israel; that is a protected right. But organized boycotting and divestment with the support of state, local or federal government is not acceptable.”
It has established a Facebook group, launched a petition for Californians to express their opposition and offered a public comment template that streamlines the process for community members to voice their concerns to the Instructional Quality Commission.
The class, which received criticism when it was offered last year, will be taught by Thomas Abowd, who has an extensive history of engaging in anti-Israel and anti-Semitic causes.
“If not addressed, this problem threatens to undermine not only the current effort to develop an ethnic studies model curriculum, but all other curricular efforts undertaken by the Department of Education,” continued a letter signed by 83 organizations.
Justice Nancy Bannon stated that Fordham “did not abide by its own published rules governing the approval and recognition of student clubs,” and that the university’s own regulations don’t reference whether an organization is “polarizing.”
However, experts are concerned about getting humanitarian aid to the Palestinians without getting it into the hands of the Palestinian Authority and its direct links to terrorists.
“It is a powerful document, written at a crucial time in Jewish history, and a reminder of the challenges the new Jewish state would have to overcome,” said Raab Collection president Nathan Raab.
“[It] is deeply troubling—not only for its shocking omission of any mention of Jewish Americans or anti-Semitism or its blatant anti-Israel bias and praise of BDS, but for its clear attempt to politically indoctrinate students to adopt the view that Israel and its Jewish supporters are part of ‘interlocking systems of oppression and privilege’ that must be fought with ‘direct action’ and ‘resistance,’ ” said Tammi Rossman-Benjamin, head of the AMCHA Initiative.
“Before Iran considers tactical negotiations regarding its nuclear program, they will seek to widen the divisions between the United States and Europe, and even the divisions within the Trump administration,” said Security Studies Group senior fellow Matthew Brodsky.
