The proposal “will unleash hatred and bigotry, especially anti-Semitism, into California’s public, charter and private schools,” according to a petition signed by more than 2,000 people.
“The endorsement will inevitably—and inequitably—discriminate against, exclude and isolate Israeli scholars by singling out the Israeli academy for boycott. The resolution’s assertion that the boycott ‘will not target individual students or scholars’ is untenable,” said Academic Engagement Network.
“We must promote civil discourse and a high-quality, inclusive cultural education that lifts up marginalized communities rather than teaching antagonistic values in our public schools,” said Rep. Josh Gottheimer.
Titled “Faculty Academic Boycotters: Ground Zero for Campus Antisemitism,” it explored anti-Semitic activity at universities starting from the onset of the 11-day conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza last May through the end of the 2020-21 academic year.
“The level of expectations and aspirations for the self-realization of the Arab citizens are on a steady upward trend,” the authors of a report by the Israel Democracy Institute said.
The partnership will focus on the exchange of researchers, experts and collections; archival research; access to library resources; and joint events and conferences.
In addition to receiving scholarships, room and board, students will have access to counseling and a space to feel secure.
