A man in his 20s from central Israel was arrested this week by Jerusalem District Police on suspicion of attacking a woman with an ax in her home on Wednesday.

On Friday morning, a court extended the suspect’s remand until Feb. 25.

He is accused of storming into the woman’s residence in the Armenian Quarter of the Old City and striking her head with the weapon. Following the attack, the suspect allegedly fled on foot and later escaped the area by taxi.

The victim sustained moderate wounds and was evacuated to a hospital.

Jerusalem District Police officers and Border Police units quickly arrived at the scene and conducted extensive searches for the suspect, and forensic teams collected evidence to aid in identifying him.

On Thursday night, officers tracked his escape route, leading to his arrest by Tiberias Police at a yeshivah in northern Israel, where he was hiding. The suspect had attempted to alter his appearance by shaving his beard to evade capture.

The investigation revealed that the suspect and the victim were previously acquainted, which led him to enter her home and commit the violent assault.
