Pini Badash, the head of Omer Regional Council—a mainly Jewish community just outside of Beersheva—stressed that the area was facing difficult times as a result of a lack of governance.
The move follows Israel’s decision to outlaw six Palestinian groups affiliated with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
“To dig in such a sensitive area without any oversight, inspection or access to the public is insane,” said director of Regavim’s International Division Naomi Kahn. “They had no right to do so.”
“The government owes it to every one of us, but first and foremost to the Bedouin citizens of Israel, to put an end to this regressive and corrupting practice immediately,” says Regavim director.
“We find it implausible that the Palestinian Authority managed to hide thousands of trucks dumping garbage over the side of a cliff along a major highway for weeks on end,” said Regavim, which is pressing for cleanup and a resolution to the situation.
Palestinians in the E1 area east of Jerusalem seem unsupportive of the plan. Those in nearby Ma’ale Adumim eagerly await it. And the Bedouin are in smack-dab in the middle of everything.
The move is seen by some segments of the country as overreach and hypocritical, and proved an issue in the year-long elections in the Jewish state.

The illegal squatters’ camp, built on state land in the Negev, has been demolished more than 150 times, costing Israeli taxpayers some $460,000.
Senior government officials said that the plan is an “extremely sensitive” matter.
Following a petition by NGO Regavim, the Israeli government has declared that it will evacuate squatters from an illegal agricultural compound near Rumat al-Heib in August.
