Israel’s Foreign Ministry Director General, Eden Bar-Tal, attended Saturday’s inauguration of Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz, the ministry said on Tuesday.

“An exciting new era for Bolivia, for Israel-Bolivia relations and the free world,” the ministry quoted Bar-Tal as saying, adding that he also attended diplomatic meetings in the capital, La Paz.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar spoke with then-president-elect Paz following the Bolivian elections, with both sides agreeing to work toward reestablishing official ties, the ministry said in an X post.

The election marked the first time in 20 years that no candidate from the Socialist MAS party appeared on the ballot, and Paz’s first-round victory surprised many, as he had started at the bottom of opinion polls.

Paz, a 58-year-old center-right senator, emphasized during his presidential campaign the importance of repairing relations with Western partners, including the United States.

Under the MAS party, Bolivia became the first country to sever ties with Israel following the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas massacre, announcing on Nov. 1, 2023, that it was cutting all diplomatic relations.

Chile, Colombia and Honduras soon followed, recalling their ambassadors from Israel and downgrading official diplomatic representation.
