Campus Antisemitism

Elana Stern, of the firm Ropes and Gray, told JNS that “no student and no family should have to experience what Eden and Montana Horwitz have had to experience.”
“This student’s ability to exercise, freely, his religion should not be incompatible with his equally important right to fully participate in residential life at Williams,” Rachel Balaban, of the Brandeis Center, told JNS.
“No child should have to endure this kind of sustained harassment and exclusion for their religious identity in a public school or any school,” the Anti-Defamation League said.
Nate Lebowitz called a recent fundraising appeal “a knife plunged into my heart” as Jewish students have described “hostility and isolation” on campus since Oct. 7.
A university spokesman told JNS that “the condemnation of such a peaceful event to share a story of resilience in the face of extreme suffering is antithetical to the values of our Bruin community.”
“The University of Washington has been notified by the U.S. Department of Justice that it is conducting a compliance review. The university will cooperate with the review and provide information and responses,” a UW spokesperson told JNS.
The state found that the district failed to protect a Jewish football player and in its subsequent investigation.
“Visas provided to foreign students to live, study and work in the United States are a privilege, not a right,” the department spokesman told JNS.
Witness statements allege that Jewish students were singled out, monitored and blocked from entering the event, with some attendees reporting antisemitic remarks heard while waiting in line.
“School districts, like colleges and universities, must take prompt and effective action to address antisemitic harassment,” stated Harmeet Dhillon, assistant U.S. attorney general for civil rights.
“The suspension of SJP is a vital step that recognizes a long-standing pattern rather than a single isolated incident,” a Duke student told JNS.
“This lawsuit seeks to hold UCLA accountable and to ensure that no faculty member is ever again subjected to such blatant discrimination,” the law firm representing the employees stated.
