Israeli officer wounded in car attack near Jerusalem; assailant shot dead

The attacker attempted to run the officer over in a vehicle near Abu Dis, a suburb of the capital, according to police.

A Israeli Border Police officer was lightly injured on Tuesday when a Palestinian driver attempted to run her over at a checkpoint linking the town of Abu Dis, a suburb of Jerusalem, and Bethlehem.

The attacker was then shot dead by other officers on the scene.

“A short while ago near Jerusalem in the area of Abu Dis a suspect vehicle attempted to run over a Border Police officer,” police spokesman Miki Rosenfeld said in a statement. “Border Police responded at the scene by opening fire at the vehicle. The terrorist was shot.”

Tensions have been high in recent weeks in parts of Judea and Samaria due to the Israeli government’s stated intention to apply its sovereignty to parts of the territories beginning in July.

“The Command continues to deepen, learn, and test solutions that will strengthen the protection of human life,” an IDF commander said.
The IDF “avoided entering the church to protect civilians and respect the sanctity of the holy site,” the Foreign Ministry said.

The two discussed bilateral ties, regional developments and “the importance of combating antisemitism,” according to Gideon Sa’ar.
The projectiles hit adjacent to troops operating south of the Lebanon ceasefire line.
Beyond the political dance vis-à-vis the Gaza Board Of Peace, the elections represent the latest maneuver in a factional struggle that has defined Palestinian politics since the violent 2007 Fatah-Hamas split.
