The international grassroots civil-rights movement #EndJewHatred has announced that it has launched a Michigan chapter to address the massive increase in antisemitism in the state. The latest expansion by the movement comes in the wake of two University of Michigan fraternity houses vandalized with antisemitic and homophobic messages.
In response to this targeting of Jewish students at the University of Michigan, #EndJewHatred mobilized to stand in solidarity with the University’s Jewish students, faculty, and staff, to send the message that Jew-hatred is as unacceptable as any other form of racism and bigotry. Social justice for the Jewish and other minority communities requires imposing consequences on bigotry and de-normalizing hate.
#EndJewHatred provides the resources and strategies to empower the community to resist hate, and proudly displayed its banners at the scene of the vandalism (image here) to show that we are unafraid and will not be intimidated. The movement also displayed a banner (image here) near John C. Lodge leading into Detroit, showing their presence is not limited to campus but will address Jew-hatred wherever it is found.
“The launch of the #EndJewHatred movement in Michigan comes in response to a dramatic rise in threats of Jew-hatred over the past year, dangerously fermenting in the state,” said Adar Rubin, a director of mobilization at #EndJewHatred, “We seek to empower, strengthen and unite the Jewish community on a grassroots level to fight back against bigotry while showing up to demand both direct action and consequence.”
#EndJewHatred has a network of activists around the world, and a growing number of chapters, as well as a Campus Fellows program that empowers and promotes the young leaders fighting for our civil rights.
