University of Haifa among top global institutions in prestigious index

After securing a place within the 101 to 200 bracket in the 2025 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, school is strongly positioned as a leader in sustainability.

University of Haifa has been ranked in the 101 to 200 bracket in the 2025 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, out of approximately 2,400 universities worldwide. This prestigious index evaluates universities based on their contributions to advancing social, economic and environmental sustainability, as defined by the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This achievement positions the University of Haifa as a national leader in sustainability, with powerful performance in the areas of gender equality, quality education, and marine environmental protection.

“The fact that we are ranked among the world’s leading universities in the areas of equality, education and environmental protection demonstrates that it is possible to combine academic excellence with a deep commitment to society,” said professor Ofer Arazy, director of innovation and sustainability at the university. “We remain dedicated to investing in research and academic initiatives that serve the greater good and address the challenges that affect us all. This is what makes the University of Haifa unique, and we will continue to play a proactive role in advancing the sustainable development of the world we all share.”

Highlights of the University of Haifa’s rankings:

  • SDG 5, Gender Equality: 26th in the world.
  • SDG 14, Life Below Water: 27th in the world.
  • SDG 4, Quality Education: 56th in the world.

In addition, the university was ranked in the 101 to 200 bracket for:

  • SDG 15, Life on Land.
  • SDG 16, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

For SDG 17, Partnerships for the Goals, which emphasizes global and local collaborations to advance sustainability, Haifa University ranked in the 201 to 300 range. This goal aligns closely with the university’s strategic vision of fostering socio-academic partnerships to address pressing global issues.

The University of Haifa is one of the first institutions in Israel to formally adopt the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals as a comprehensive institutional framework. This commitment is reflected in the school’s research, teaching, campus operations and community engagement.

The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings are among the most influential in global higher education. They assess how well universities contribute to achieving the SDGs across a wide range of areas, including poverty reduction, education, public health, gender equity, climate action, social justice and sustainable development. Final scores are based on indicators that measure research quality, teaching, community impact and institutional sustainability practices.
