The Israeli president joined Holocaust survivors and former Hamas captives in Poland to mark 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz.
“The presence of ambassadors from around the world today is a powerful reminder that the victims’ memories live on,” stated Danny Danon, Israeli ambassador to the United Nations.
Jews of all generations meet Merrill Eisenhower, the great-grandson of U.S. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, at Auschwitz 80 years after its liberation.
Merrill Eisenhower will join Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Polish President Andrzej Duda alongside 80 Holocaust survivors, some of whom were liberated by U.S. and Allied forces led by his great grandfather.
Holocaust scholar Debórah Dwork held a book launch at the United Nations.
His “fate was just rumors,” Yuval said of his grandfather’s brother. “This trip gave my family proof and closure we never imagined possible.”
This evening’s lights are “a memorial to the 6 million lives lost and a bright reminder of our unwavering solidarity,” Mayor Eric Adams said.
“I demand the world remember what happened only 80 years ago,” she said.
Holocaust survivors and scholars said the international community’s abandonment of the Jewish state belies its promises to learn from the genocide.
This year’s commemoration marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
The woman who turned over the cache, which contains a prisoner’s uniform and a ragdoll, said her father had collected it right after liberation.
