A Jewish-run and kosher-certified soup kitchen and food pantry operating in New York City has partnered with the food-delivery service DoorDash to provide meals and groceries to families in need in the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens.
In February, DoorDash workers delivered nearly 2,500 grocery packages organized by the nonprofit Masbia, which has two locations in Brooklyn and one in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Queens, reported Patch. The partnership continues this month, with Masbia planning to have DoorDash make more than 1,000 weekly home deliveries to families facing food insecurity.
“We have seen firsthand the challenges to meeting the growing need for getting food to our neighbors in need, especially by providing dignity to people by eliminating their breadline experience one family at a time,” said Masbia executive director Alexander Rapaport, referring to the long lines at food pantries that became even worse during the coronavirus pandemic.
Masbia uploads the deliveries online through DoorDash, which ensures that the food is brought to the addresses provided, said a DoorDash spokesperson.
“This partnership is part of our ongoing work to broaden food access through Project DASH and underscores the importance of businesses and community leaders coming together to break down barriers and meet our most vulnerable neighbors where they are,” said Sascha Owen, senior manager of government relations at DoorDash.
Project DASH is a DoorDash initiative that partners with food banks and food pantries to address the issue of food insecurity.
Masbia distributes take-home food packages at its three locations Monday through Friday.
