Hadassah, The Women’s Zionist Organization of America, welcomes veteran American-Israeli health care journalist Maayan Hoffman as the new host of its podcast, “Hadassah On Call: New Frontiers in Medicine.” Through interviews with world-renowned doctors from the Hadassah Medical Organization, Hadassah’s medical center in Jerusalem, Hoffman, a third-generation Hadassah member, will bring listeners the latest medical breakthroughs from the people who develop and deploy them.
A specialist in global health issues, Hoffman is a senior correspondent for the Geneva-based health website Health Policy Watch and The Jerusalem Report. She worked with The Jerusalem Post from 2015 to 2022, including serving as the media outlet’s health reporter and analyst during the COVID-19 pandemic. She was recently named the company’s director of conferences.
Now in its fourth year, “Hadassah On Call: New Frontiers in Medicine” has explored groundbreaking medical solutions like stem cell harvesting and corneal transplantation; new treatments for cancer, cardiac disease and other often life-threatening illnesses; myriad aspects of COVID-19; chronic conditions like joint pain, sleeplessness and headaches; physical and emotional trauma, including sexual abuse and PTSD; and issues connected to sexuality, infertility and menopause, to name just some of the topics addressed over the course of almost 60 episodes.

In the most recent episode of “Hadassah On Call,” “Monkeypox: Should We Hit the Panic Button?”, Allon E. Moses, MD, immediate past head of the Hadassah Medical Organization’s Department of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, discussed this latest global health scare. Other experts from the medical center who have shared their expertise and insights include:
- Dror Mevorach, MD, head of the Rheumatology Research Center, who developed a promising experimental COVID drug called Allocetra™;
- Polina Stepensky, MD, director of the Department of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Immunotherapy, who is overseeing a study on an experimental treatment for multiple myeloma;
- Orly Elpeleg, MD, head of the Department of Genetic and Metabolic Diseases, who identified a previously unrecognized genetic mutation that causes a rare and devastating pediatric neurological disease; and
- Dimitrios Karussis, MD, chief of the Neuroimmunology Unit and the Multiple Sclerosis Center, who led a team that developed a way to harvest a patient’s bone marrow to arrest multiple sclerosis.
