Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Convenes for Hearing on “The Battle for Area C”

For the first time since the formation of the emergency government, the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee will convene today (Wednesday), under the chairmanship of MK Zvi Hauser (Derech Eretz) for a hearing on the battle for Area C and illegal, European funded Palestinian Authority construction in areas under full Israeli jurisdiction.

The Wednesday, July 29 hearing of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee was convened at the request of MK Dr. Shlomo Karai (Likud) after he participated in an in-depth, fact-finding field tour to learn about the scope and implications of the phenomenon. “The Palestinian takeover of Area C is so widespread and serious that the defense establishment must devote the necessary resources and formulate a comprehensive and effective response that will put a stop to it,” said Karai. “I have requested this hearing in order to receive a full, detailed survey by our defense forces of Israel’s response to the Palestinian onslaught.”

At the hearing, which was postponed several times due to the corona crisis, Regavim will present its most recent findings on the extent of land-seizures in the past year, and particularly since the announcement of President Trump’s “deal of the century” which ignited a Palestinian “construction race” aimed at creating facts on the ground in areas slated for Israeli sovereignty.

Meir Deutsch, Director General of Regavim:

“Several months ago, we hosted the Chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, MK Zvi Hauser, on a fact-finding tour of Gush Etzion, to give him a first-hand look at the battle that is raging down on the ground. Since then, Hauser has investigated the issue more thoroughly. We are confident that today’s hearing will be a significant step toward creating a comprehensive government strategy for facing this challenge.”
