The announcement is tied to legislation “ … to stop public bodies from imposing their own approach or views about international relations, through preventing boycott, divestment or sanctions campaigns against foreign countries.”
“I stand against apartheid because I believe that all people deserve to live under equal rights, regardless of ethnicity or religion,” said Phara Souffrant Forrest.
The position will be based in eastern Jerusalem or Ramallah.
Bates Leftist Coalitions said it has “no knowledge of the circumstances by which this act occurred.”
A number of progressive Democrats have been vocal in their criticism of Israel during the recent wave of violence in the region.
“Islam’s 3rd holiest site is being used to stockpile Molotov cocktails and rocks being lobbed at police and Jewish worshippers praying at the Western Wall, below the Temple Mount,” Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan tweeted in response to the Michigan legislator.
Global Affairs Canada spokesperson Grantly Franklin said “Canada is concerned that the Durban process has and continues to be used to push for anti-Israel sentiment and as a forum for anti-Semitism.”
Managing director of global communications at the American Jewish Committee Avi Mayer praised the decision, tweeting: “Kudos for rejecting hate.”
A number of student organizations co-sponsored individual events, including Jewish Coalition for Peace.
