IDF arrests Palestinian hunter on suspicion of opening fire near Modi’in

The shooter initially raised concerns of a second terrorist attack in two days.

Israeli forces apprehended a Palestinian near Saffa, in the Binyamin region of Samaria, on Saturday, on suspicion that he used his personal firearm for hunting earlier in the day, the Israel Defense Forces said.

The man allegedly went hunting adjacent to the Hasmonean checkpoint, near the city of Modi’in, raising suspicion of a terrorist attack.

Israeli security forces later identified the Palestinian as a hunter who opened fire less than a mile away from Modi’in’s security fence.

Guided by the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet), the IDF and Israel Border Police located and detained the suspect.

His weapon was located and confiscated, and he was transferred to the Israel Police for further processing, the IDF said.

On Friday, Israeli forces launched operations in the Palestinian town of Qabatiya, near Jenin in northern Samaria, following a deadly terrorist attack in northern Israel earlier in the day.

According to the military, forces conducted a “precise operational search” of the attacker’s residence and mapped the site in preparation for its demolition.

Two people were killed and two others wounded in a series of ramming and stabbing attacks in northern Israel on Friday.

The slain victims were identified as Shimshon Mordechai, 68, fatally struck by a vehicle in Beit She’an, and Aviv Maor, 19, who was run over and then stabbed.

The Israeli military said air-defense systems were operating to intercept the incoming threat.
